NSW Juniors Training Weekend - Rain or Shine

A NSWFDA subsidized event, the juniors training weekend was designed to encourage as many junior athletes from NSW to develop their skills at an advanced level as well as to create a forum for these young people and their parents to meet and ask questions about the upcoming selections for Worlds 2008. Despite the ominous weather conditions, the weekend was a huge success. With over 30 junior players attending, all with enough talent to try out for the National junior teams, there was no question that Ultimate is growing stronger.

Held at Macquarie University, the weekend was run by a large group of volunteers with a wealth of knowledge to offer these young people. NSWFDA Development Officer Nikki Shires recalls "I am always amazed at how generous our experienced players are to help juniors. I think they get as much as out of it as they give to the junior players. It gives them a sense of giving back to the community." She notes that NSW club Fakulti was especially supportive, offering to help throughout the weekend. A strong presence among the volunteers, players such as Ken Shepherd, Pete Gardner, Anthony Dowle, Matt Oswald, James Yorston, Matt Faulkner, Alex Wong, Brendan Sandoval, Pete Blakely, Liam Kendrick, Luke Turner and Andrew Glover offered their knowledge of the game to the juniors over the weekend. There were also men and women volunteers from all over Sydney whose help was vital and greatly appreciated. Macquarie University players, ex-juniors, players from Manly and the Hills and even some dedicated parents came down to help. Through this support, our juniors were able to take away an enormous amount of skills and tactics. Junior athletes came from as far away as Tamworth showing the depth of development that is happening in NSW at the moment.

It is the hope of the NSWFDA that our junior players feel prepared for the upcoming junior training camps and feel they are supported by their state.

Special thanks must go to Tim Keighley who was the "volunteer of the event" helping with everything from organising fields and lunches to printing flyers and getting ice for injuries. Thank goodness for quiet achievers!

Beach Bonanza

Beach Bonanza Sponsored by Community Relations Commission for a multicultural NSW, Friday, 19 October 2007, Wanda Beach, Cronulla

What would you prefer to do, go to your regular job all Friday, or earn money for going to the beach and playing Ultimate? I chose the latter of the two and there were no regrets. Ryan Purcell, Brett Latham and myself all took part in this community affair as a chance to teach Ultimate to hundreds of kids.

The Community Relations Council for the Southerland Shire invited UFNSW to be a part of this unique opportunity at Wanda Beach, Cronulla for primary-aged school kids. There were as many as 11 different schools participating from across the Shire and this event was organised to bring together kids from different ethnic groups and geographical areas.

In order to meet different kids from the other schools, the students were split up into ten different groups, each group with their own colour cap. The groups rotated around ten different activities, including beach sprints, indigenous games, kite making and playing Ultimate.

Each group came past in turn for their 20 minute slot of learning how to play Ultimate. Although there wasn't much time with each group, we tried to give them a good taste of how fun playing with a disc can be. We knew we had been successful when a few kids in every group expressed genuine pleasure at the end of each session and 30 or 40 kids were throwing discs around for most of the lunch break.

It was a special initiative to be a part of and I am glad I took part. A big thanks to my companion coaches Ryan and Brett. Incidentally, Brett was unstoppable with his whistle all day and certainly has a knack for coaching kids! We finished off the day with a swim and the satisfaction that not only were we out of the office all day, but that we gave something back to our community.
